[Brew-list] August Fair and Summer Party Update

Hi all,

I have done the demo for the past four or five years, but will be working on
Saturday. However, it is real easy to do. Basically, the club pays for the
ingredients, and you brew an extract brew. It's more fun to have two people
and take brews with you to drink since it is a Saturday morning and warm in
the building. Just call me and I'll help whom ever wants to do it, plan it.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi all! I want to make sure that everyone knows the details about the fair
and entering beer, wine, and/or liqueurs for some pretty big prizes! Here is
a link to the fair website for more info and - new this year - on-line entry
forms. www.WesternMontanaFair.com (the link my not work, but paste it into
the URL address location. You can also pick up a fair "premium book" at many
locations around town,

First and most important - entering your beverage! Beverages are considered
"perishable" but they can be entered at he same time as non-perishable or
the beginning of the week of the fair. Non-perishables - that's canned jams,
pickles, chutney, etc. - can be dropped off at the Culinary Bldg in the Fair
Grounds on Monday (today!) 7/28 and Tuesday 7/29 from 8 am until 8 pm. Or
you can drop off your beverages during the perishables (cakes, cookies,
breads) time period on Sunday 8/3 and Monday 8/4 from 8 am until 8 pm. You
can have someone else drop off your entries.

Judging will take place on Tuesday 8/5, starting at 11 am. If you are not
entering a beverage, we might be able to use you to judge the beers. Ten
Spoons is judging the wines and liqueurs and Big Sky will be doing the
beers.

What to enter: You can enter one beverage (only one bottle needed) per
category, as many categories as you like. For beer, there are only 4 general
categories, light, amber, dark, and specialty. You need to list the style of
beer you wish your beer to be judged against as well as the general
category. Wines have more categories: white dinner, dry white, dry red, red
dinner, white dessert, red dessert, liqueur, sparkling, and "any other" as
well as cider, root beer and "fun drinks." Again, list a more descriptive
style if possible.

Prizes!!!!! ZCZ gives best of show awards ($25 gift certificates to Lolo
Peak Winery) for best beer and best wine (including liqueurs, ciders, etc.).
Lolo Peak also gives a $20 gift certificate for best of show wine (possibly
different entry from ZCZ prize). Big Sky brewing gives 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and
honorable mention awards of $30, $20, $15, and $10 gift certificates for
each of the four categories. The Fair gives ribbons, best of show rosettes
and premiums of $3, $2, and $1 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. It is possible
for the best of show beer entry to walk away with a big, pretty rosette
ribbon, $3 in cash, $25 gift certificate to Lolo Peak and $30 gift cert to
Big Sky! Not bad for one bottle of beer!

Cashing in!!!! You can pick up your entry and prizes after 8:15 pm on
Sunday, 8/10. Monday, 8/11 is the best from 11 am until 8 pm. Fair premiums
can be cashed at the premium bank during the fair or at the fair office
until 5pm on Friday, August 15. After 8/15, you forfeit your winnings. You
have to have your claim check (entry form) to claim your premiums.

As far as the demo brew goes - They would love us to do it, but whomever
steps up will probably have to plan the entire thing. Most of us who have
been involved (planning or executing) in the past won't be around this year.
I understand it's fun (I've only been in the planning department) and this
year, right before the chili cook-off on Saturday, so very appropriate. The
Culinary co-superintendent I have been working with is Donna Stewart at
207-1272. If someone takes the lead on this, you will need to organize it
with her.

Lots to see at the fair, even the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, just still no
horse racing. Activities start on Tuesday, 8/5 and run all day and evenings
until Sunday, 8/10!

Hope the club members - and others - have lots of entries this year! Good
luck to one and all! Remember, the opportunity for bragging rights at the
ZCZ summer party the very next weekend. Save some bottles to share.

Pam

Alright Everyone.

There are some fun events coming up in the next few weeks. First of the
Fair is coming on August 9th. Anyone interested can enter home brews for a
fun competition. Wine and mead are also accepted. There are gift
certificates for the winners. There is also the possibility of doing a home
brewing demo to show people what it is all about. I will be gone all of
that week, and cannot participate. If there is anyone interested please let
me know. It will be a lot of fun, and the club will be able to drink the
beer at the October meeting. Also, we have all the equipment you'll need to
do it, and the club will pay for ingredients. We will get some more detials
about entering homebrews in the competition.

Also, August 16th is the next Zoo City Zymurgist summer party. There will
be two kegs of homebrew, and most likely some food. Don't forget to mark
the calendars. Be sure to bring some homebrews for some feedback and to show
off your great homebrewing skills. There will also be more info on the
particulars in the next couple weeks. August is certainly a great month for
beer and groups of fun people. So see everyone soon and stay cool.
