So that means we have a brew meeting. I hope everyone can make it. I will be glad to host at my house, but I have to be gone until 6:00. After that we can do an extract brew for the summer party in August. If anyone has a certain brew they would love to have in August just let me know. We will make it. Hopefully we will get to see everyone this weekend. Also, how are peoples hops coming along? Does anyone need help with some structures or are there any problems? Just let us know. First, I'm pretty sure that Mike and I will make it to the brew meeting on Saturday. At least, it's on our schedule. Second, I have three more barrels available for anyone who didn't get in on the first round or anyone who likes theirs so much that they need another one. Two of them are the closed top Olive Oil barrels and one is an open top palm oil barrel. Let me know if you want them or drive by the shop and pick them up, first come first served...however, the palm oil barrel is not outside yet. Also, Nathan, I still have the extra top to one of your barrels. Looking forward to using them this year or packaging them for a trade-off when the time comes. Hopefully we'll be in town for the august party/meeting. I've attached a picture of my hops that I started from the roots that we traded back in May. They started slow, but with the warm weather, they are starting to branch out and vine. not bad, considering they just looked like sticks when I put them in the ground. I've got a 4 ft fence for them to climb for now. I'll lash on some bamboo or something for them to climb when they get to the top of that. See you Saturday. Norman. My hops crested the rooftop (~15') this week: http://images.montanahomebrewers.org/hops-june18-2008.jpg As for a recipe for the brew, I propose a blonde ale -- easy, cheap, and will be nice on an August afternoon. Could be just a 7lb of light liquid extract, 2 oz of the 'new zealand cascade' or similar (note that hops prices have gone by by 400%!) divided into 3 equal additions at 60, 15, and 5 minutes remaining, 2 packs of coopers dry yeast. Cheap and easy. :D -JM On tap: Belgian Strong Dark, Breakfast Stout, Wheaty-IPA, Imperial IPA Fermenting: BFB 16% Barleywine, 24-lb mead, American Pilsner ;) On deck to brew: Northwest IPA From normjsingley at gmail.com Mon Jun 23 22:00:23 2008 From: normjsingley at gmail.com (normj singley) Date: Mon Jun 23 22:00:29 2008 Subject: [Brew-list] BIG Batch Message-ID: <5f2003740806232100p768c6d4bw8e9c84424cdf31b0@mail.gmail.com> Hi all - Thanks to Nathan for hosting the meeting on Sat. A good time was had by all. I am planning on brewing a big batch of my pilsner, to hopefully be ready for some late summer hot weather consumption. My friend has a 14 gallon carboy. I am planning on brewing, then primary fermenting in brew buckets, then transferring them into the big glass carboy in the fridge. I've never made a batch bigger than 5 or 6 gallons before. the recipe I have is for 5 gallons. it will probably be mostly grains, with a little extract thrown in for good measure. what do I need to do to calculate the recipe up to a 14 gallon batch? are ingredient curves linear? are they linear for all the different ingredients? I really don't know. any body have any advice? oh yeah, and Nathan, I will need to borrow the club's big brew kettles for this project. I will shoot to brew this on friday or saturday. I'll be in touch. Thanks in advance. norman. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My understanding is that things should be roughly linear presuming you are still doing a full wort boil (boiling slightly more liquid than you intend to end up with as finished beer). Depending on the dimensions of your mash tun I guess gravity could compact the grain bed more with a monster batch, so you might mix in a few fistfuls of rice hulls to keep it flowing. Other than that, the tastybrew.com calculator is your friend: http://www.tastybrew.com/calculators/recipe.html I have an American pilsner lagering at 35 degrees right now -- we'll have to compare "notes" in August! -JM PS -- if you know any brew-list members with @hotmail.com addresses -- Hotmail, in their infinite wisdom, may be discarding or rejecting all brew-list messages. Try re-subscribing from a different address. normj singley wrote: > I've never made a batch bigger than 5 or 6 gallons before. the recipe I > have is for 5 gallons. it will probably be mostly grains, with a little > extract thrown in for good measure. what do I need to do to calculate > the recipe up to a 14 gallon batch? are ingredient curves linear? are > they linear for all the different ingredients?
