From nboot98 at hotmail.com Mon May 12 21:14:27 2008 From: nboot98 at hotmail.com (Nathan Boot) Date: Mon May 12 21:14:30 2008 Subject: [Brew-list] Happy May Message-ID: Hey everyone, I haven't sent out an e-mail lately, so I figured I would. First off, Brewfest went well. The club sold a bunch of T-shirts, and everyone seemed to have a great time. I'll get a list of the beers that won awards when I get it. Also, I was wondering how everyones hops are growing? All the roots I planted have some growth. If anyone wants help setting up some type of structure for theirs to grow up let us know. The only other bit of news I can think of is to let everyone know that Jeff offered to help people out with yeast. He is involved with the yeast archiving at the University, and he is willing to give a short lesson at the next meeting on how to culture yeast. He also said he would be willing to either start or help start a yeast starter. Just contact him to ask him any questions you might have. He also asked if anyone has a strain they might want to have archived. Again just let him know. jeff.piotrowski@mso.umt.edu That just about covers my news, I hope everyone is having a great spring, and just to remind everyone if anyone has a beer they want us to taste and get notes back to let me know. We are still doing our judging class. Thanks Nathan Boot _________________________________________________________________ Get Free (PRODUCT) RED? Typically we have not even planted our hops until we're able to hook up with our hop guy at the farmer's market, which would be right around now. As for our hops, that we were going to share, but didn't find the time...one is doing okay and they other is just barely coming up. I don't know what the deal is up here on the hill. When we lived on the West Side we could barely keep our hops under control. Up here we can barely get them to grow. After several years of growing several varieties of hops fine, last year we had some of the plants show signs of leaf curl and stunted growth. We have as always just used compost, and do not use any sprays that might had effected them. Now again this spring they all came up looking great, but are now showing the same signs as last. Does anyone else have this problem? I was told to place some black plastic around the bases of them to help heat up the soil. We do live at 3000' and it has been cool this spring. But not last spring, so not sure of that idea. Any thoughts would be welcome. I thought I narrowed it down to a lack of potassium, or some nonsense. Never did really find a fix in time, and didn't get anything for a harvest. I assumed it could have also been a real hot dry summer, as I didn't see the problem last year until late in July, and august when it got real hot.
