I'll let you know as soon as I know. Also, there are other topics to decide on so if you haven't voted yet take a few moments and give us your input. http://www.grupthink.com/grup/40 We also have another meeting coming up on October 18th, so make a note on the calendar. We have a keg of American Brown Ale that was too young at the summer party, but should be just right at the meeting. We will be discussing some of the grupthink topics, and probably drinking some beer. Also, I was hoping to get a club brew going. I would like to get together once a month use the clubs equipment and brew some beer. We can decide what beer each month, and it can be either all-grain or extract. Then when it is ready and keged folks can come fill up growlers. If there are some people interested in participating let me know and we can work out how to make it happen. I think it would also be fun to invite friends who would enjoy learning about homebrewing. Drop me a line and we can get some beer brewing. I shall take careful notes and report my findings to you all. -JM From john at johnmasterson.com Fri Oct 10 09:19:22 2008 From: john at johnmasterson.com (John Masterson) Date: Fri Oct 10 09:19:24 2008 Subject: [Brew-list] GABF Report Message-ID: <48EF727A.6090707@johnmasterson.com> Howdy all, Photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/magnafix/sets/72157607894752438/ My report: The Great American Beer Festival in downtown Denver is big. Really big. And they have a thing or two to learn about crowd operations. We arrived 15 minutes after the doors opened and the line to enter was about a mile a long. A mile, that's right. It took 15 minutes to walk to the end of the line, and then retrace our steps over 45 minutes to get inside. Once we were in, all was well, though I was a little overwhelmed the first 30 minutes or so. With 2,300 beers to choose from, how do you start? What reasonable attack plan can possibly be formulated? I talked over the options with my parents, who rode their Harley to the event from Texas to meet me and bought me the event ticket for my upcoming birthday. * Multi-state: try to have a beer from every state * Linelessness: try beers at tables with no line * Bikini-clad pourers: that might have been a nice strategy but there were none. * Ingredient scavenger hunt: Try the really creative beers * Gradual progression: Blonde to Amber to Pale Ale to IPA to Oktoberfest to Porter to Barleywine? * Special releases: Seekout the big breweries and see what special stuff they have. Sam Adams was serving their 25%ABV Utopia! * BIG beers: have fewer samples of huge beers. * Cool names: "Dragon's Milk" attracted me. I saw guys there with notebooks and such, taking copious notes on each one-ounce sample and checking breweries off their lists. I decided that might interfere with the fun factor for me, so I just drank a lot of beer, using a little of each of the strategies above. After a few delightful blonde ales, Kolchs, and hefs from various Colorado breweries, I went with the linelessness strategy for a while, and then went BIG beer hunting. A few highlights I dimly remember: * a ginger and lemongrass blonde that wasn't very beer-like but was delicious. * a 10% oak-aged Lambic that was complicated and awesome. * Dragon's Milk, another big oak-aged beer. * A belgian strong dark aged in brandy barrels was incredible. * lots of "double" and "imperial" IPAs were fun and belong in my kegerator. We finished the night with a 10-minute judging training session with a certified judge who flew in from London. He told us to smell the hops and my mom put a handful in her mouth. Good fun. Anyway -- a good time was had by all, and once I shake off this fuzzy-headed headache I might have additional recollections. -JM From nboot98 at hotmail.com Mon Oct 13 13:14:23 2008 From: nboot98 at hotmail.com (Nathan Boot) Date: Mon Oct 13 13:14:27 2008 Subject: [Brew-list] October Meeting And Community Brew!! I just wanted to remind ya'll that the Mastersons will unfortunately also miss this weekend's meeting as we're heading to Berkeley, CA for a conference. Thanks! I am going to be doing an all grain brew on Sunday for the club. We will be drinking it at the Christmas party. So anyone interest just swing on by my house. 1602 Schilling. If you have any questions give me a call 543-9573. I plan on getting the mash going at around 10:30 am. If anyone just wants to swing by for a little while thats fine. Drinking beer is a social event, I figure making it should be as well. Hope to see some people there. I was thinking of making a big ol IPA. I have a decent amount of Missoula grown hops, and most in the club like it. If anyone has another suggestion let us know. On another note. If you haven't voted for t-shirts or brewery tour dont forget. http://www.grupthink.com/topic/12316 http://www.grupthink.com/topic/12315 I will be getting the t-shirts made soon so we can start wearing them for Christmas. Have a great day, and maybe see you Sunday. Nathan Boot 1602 Schilling 543-9573 _________________________________________________________________ You live life beyond your PC.
