Even talks of a hop harvest party! Did Nathan get one worked out (we've been out of town alot). I harvested my Cascades the other day, used some fresh into a batch of Gingered Dark Ale - hope it's tasty, sure smelled great. Let me know if there will be some hop trading going on. I'm going to vac-pac mine this weekend. Barb Severson http://www.deerislandbrewery.com/hops.html ____________________________________________________________ Looking for insurance? From what I can tell they were planted in 1932 by my wife's grandfather when they homesteaded in Montana from Germany. Here are some pics of the hops. http://picasaweb.google.com/wruediger/Hops/photo#5239054369230893010 Initially I suspected these were brewers gold since they look similar to my gold's, however mine don't have the same grassy aroma. I made hop tea at 1oz/gal and it was very bitter. Had a grassy like taste and smelled like hay at first (5 min, 10 min) this diminished at 15 min to pretty much bitter only. At the 1 hr point it was pure bitter with little other flavor. Message-ID: <9F90DA52-7DB4-11DD-8C9B-000393AA7EB8@blackfoot.net> Thoughts on old Montana Hops. After seeing Bill's pictures of his old hops planted in the thirties, they look much like the first ones I ever grew here in Lozeau. When I first wondered about growing hops my neighbor welcomed to give me a start off hers. When I came over she had a huge bush growing along one side of her lawn. She explained that her past husband had planted them in the late forties for shade. Not knowing the variety I took a small rot start home as my first hop start. It has been my best grower and producer ever since. I had not listed it on my report as it was unknown. I ended up with 15 ounces off it, and it looks exactly as the pictures Bill sent us. I use mine in a couple dark beers I brew. My mystery hop seems to be along the aroma side of things. So does anyone know what varieties of hops were grown here during the turn of the century? I'm sure the local breweries weren't shipping them in Fedex ground. A couple notes: I have two friendly dogs, the older one Jake will "smile" at you, he's not vicious but it can look that way. The younger one Tanner still has a lot of puppy in him, he will lick you if he can, he thinks you have treats in your hand. He responds well to a stern 'NO', you won't hurt his feelings. Second there is plenty of parking in the side yard, you'll see my red truck in the grass, anything up to the garden is fine. Look for a cedar house with a pickup camper in the driveway. Did you get to 1.092 with all grain or use extract to get that OG? - Bill -----Original Message----- From: brew-list-bounces@montanahomebrewers.org [mailto:brew-list-bounces@montanahomebrewers.org] On Behalf Of John Masterson Sent: Sunday, September 21, 2008 12:41 PM To: brew list Subject: [Brew-list] an Impending Holiday Ale Brewed a 1.092 spiced holiday ale yesterday in preparation for the club's xmas party. It seems to be a lively beast. I dumped the cooled wort atop the yeast cake from last weekend's India Brown Ale. It was gurgling up into the airlock within 3 hours, so I attached a blowoff tube. Overnight it overtook the capacity of the one gallon jug into which I'd put about 2" of sanitizing solution: http://www.johnmasterson.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/xmasaleblowout. jpg -J P.S., Have you voted yet? http://www.grupthink.com/grup/40 _______________________________________________ Brew-list mailing list Brew-list@montanahomebrewers.org http://mailapp.modwest.com/mailman/listinfo/brew-list Hosted by Modwest (http://www.modwest.com) From john at johnmasterson.com Sun Sep 21 16:06:49 2008 From: john at johnmasterson.com (John Masterson) Date: Sun Sep 21 16:06:54 2008 Subject: [Brew-list] an Impending Holiday Ale In-Reply-To: <002601c91c2e$9b6d1360$783ffea9@glacier.local> References: <002601c91c2e$9b6d1360$783ffea9@glacier.local> Message-ID: <48D6C579.2020408@johnmasterson.com> I still haven't upgraded my mashtun so 13 lbs of grain is my feasible max. Added 3lbs of extract to the boil. (Actually added the extract to a boil consisting only of first runnings, creating a super-wort that I boiled for 15m to try and get some kettle carmelization for this sweetly spiced and heady brew.) Bill, I took your advice and deeply stirred the mash every 15 minutes, and was especially diligent about temperature measurements; my mashing efficiency was the best I've had in a long, long time. j Bill Ruediger wrote: > That's a nice color of varnish on your wood floor. And now it is ready to be bottled. Is there anyone who would like to do the bottling. It would be on Monday, Sept. 29th, at 2:30pm. They provide the bottles, you just have to bring your bottling and capping equipment. The last two times I did it, I also brought caps. Please let me know if you want to volunteer for this. It takes about an hour and the residents who come to it enjoy the show. Plus you get to go to the party in Oct. to drink the beer. I'd blame the yeast more than the orange peel and coriander. Can't wait to taste them, John. Norman. Its interesting to see so many varieties being grown. Just bottled two batches that were dry hopped, the aroma and sample taste was wonderful. Can hardly wait for them to age up a bit.
