He was on my volleyball team last summer and I have known his wife for a few years. They are actually interested in homebrewing themselves! He, of course, will not be able to partake in the tasting, but if anyone wants to bring some bottles of homebrew for a tip at the end of the day I think he would be delighted! I have some packed up for him and I'm sure he will love to hear more about our esteemed group! See you in the am! Tom, I wanted to thank you all again for coming and I hope you had a good time during your brief visit here to Lakeside and Tamarack Brewing Company. Its always a lot of fun for me to talk with people passionate about beer and beer making like myself. Also, you requested some information. I not recalling exactly what you were looking for but let me throw some ideas and places to start looking. Please check out www.montanabrewers.org . This is a new site and is part of the Montana brewers getting organized and wanting to contribute to our communities and beer making objectives that effect us all locally, statewide, and nationally. Tony Herbert is the executive director and a fantastic individual. At the website above you will find information about individual membership of the Montana Brewers Association. I encourage you and anyone else in your home brew club or friends, or any other individuals or business/organizations that may be interested in supporting our efforts to please join. You will also find links there to all of the breweries who are members statewide as well as some associate members who have joined the wave to support Montana Craft Brewers. We really are trying to create something special. Thank you all for your enthusiastic support of craft beer. Its the best and its fresh. Cheers! From nboot98 at hotmail.com Sat Apr 11 11:19:02 2009 From: nboot98 at hotmail.com (Nathan Boot) Date: Sat Apr 11 11:19:08 2009 Subject: [Brew-list] Upcoming meeting and other business Message-ID: Hey folks, Well 2 months have gone by in a flash, and another meeting in coming up fast. Next Saturday April 18th is an official meeting time for the club. We can do it at my house, 1602 Schilling, I never mind. Probably around 6:00 or so. We have some stuff to discuss, and we are also going to need to pick a new president. With my wedding this summer and my moving out of town, and all the planning involved there just has not been the time to take care of the club the way I would like to. So lets be ready to pass the torch. As far as business for the meeting, be sure to bring you Irish Red for a little friendly homebrew club competition. You get some great bragging rights for impressing us all with your beer. We will also be discussing the upcoming Missoula Brewfest, and any other business we have. Hopefully everyone can make it, and we'll see you next week. We will get some shirts off to the breweries that were visited on the brewery fieldtrip. It sounds like everyone had a great time. Mike, I'll give you a call this weekend, and figure out who to get the shirts to. Have a great day, and see you soon. Spring is here again, so what better way to celebrate the rebirth of spring than with Earth Week, a celebration of the Earth that brings us all that sustains us.. including the organic barley and hops for making wonderful organic beer! Spring has also brought us a fresh new shipment of organic hops, making the worlds best selection of organic hops better than ever! Our expanded selection includes the return of some very popular hops: Kent Goldings, Fuggles, and Challenger pellets and new crop German Spalt Select whole hops. We also have new offerings including German Opal (spicy almost peppery aroma and flavor hop), Belgian Admiral in pellets (strong bittering hop with a pronounced fruity character), American Summit (bittering with citrus/grapefruit character), and American Palisades (mellow, mildly spicy like Willamette). We also have some new organic malts in our inventory including the long awaited Black malt from Briess, a new Pale Ale malt from Briess, and Crystal 15 malt from Great Western. Browse our full selection of organic hops: http://www.breworganic.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=217 And our organic malts: http://www.breworganic.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=214 Sadly, we recently had to drop some items from our product line due to problems with organic certification. Most of the organic malts from Weyermann including Carafa 2, Vienna, Carahell, CaraMunich, and Pale Munich were recently discontinued because we learned that their organic certificate was not in compliance with USDA NOP standards. Because of this it is no longer legal for us to sell the Weyermann specialty malts with an organic label or for organic breweries to use in their certified organic beers in the USA. Only two Weyermann malts are currently available that are fully compliant with USDA NOP standards: Organic wheat malt and organic Pilsner malt. We are continuing to stock these high quality malts despite the hefty price to give organic brewers the best selection of organic ingredients possible. If you are a fan of the Weyermann organic specialty malts and would like to urge them to market organic malts here in the US that are USDA compliant, please write them a note. Your comments can make a difference! Here is a link to the Weyermann website guest book, where you can post your comments: http://www.weyermann.de/eng/__gb.asp?go=gb&umenue=yes&idmenue=43&sprache=2 Because Vienna malt is no longer available and one of the most difficult for many of our customers to find organic substitutes for, we now offer the best substitute we could find: Vienna style malt blend. Based upon advice from one of the leading North American malting companies, we now offer a 50/50 Blend of Weyermann Pilsner and Gambrinus Munich malt which creates a malt profile almost identical to Vienna malt. Use a few pounds to add increased golden color and rich malt flavor, or use as a base malt for recipes which call for Vienna malt. Many of our customers already employ some of these money saving strategies, because saving money is always a good idea! #1: Buy larger packages. Bulk buying can save as much as 75% when it comes to buying grains. A 50 pound sack of grain is almost half the cost of buying by the pound. For instance, Briess organic 2-row is $2.10 per lb., but when you buy a 50 lb. bag the cost drops to $1.18 per lb. Extract and hops are also available in larger packages that can help you save money. #2: Take advantage of sales. We have monthly specials on Organic Beer Kits, coffees, and other ingredients. Our monthly sale items are always offered here: http://www.breworganic.com/Catalog/specials.htm #3: Order more, less often. If you have your purchases shipped or have to drive far to our store, it makes sense to order larger amounts to save on shipping. The cost per pound for shipping can drop significantly with larger orders. Most base ingredients stay fresh for at least 3 months if properly stored, so stocking up does not need to mean lower quality. #4: Join the Organic Buyers Club. If you regularly buy our kits, the average savings on 1 Organic Beer Kit for Buyers Club Members is nearly $6. Most Club Members recoup the cost of membership within 3 months. If you brew with friends, the savings can be even greater. For more information about the Buyers Club: http://www.breworganic.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=306 #5: Brew larger batches- If you can combine resources with friends or do a back to back brew, you will save time and money by using less water and heat per gallon brewed. Not to mention, you will have more awesome organic beer to share with your friends! #6: Buy heavy items locally. If you live thousands of miles away, then you most likely already know how expensive shipping heavy items can be. Although most homebrew stores are not interested in stocking a wide range of organic ingredients, many are willing to special order a sack of grain, a bucket of extract, or a full sack of DME. If you can obtain the heaviest base ingredients locally it will cost significantly less to ship specialty grains and hops rom California. We are also starting to work with more homebrew stores in other parts of the country that may already stock some of our products. It never hurts to ask your local shop to stock organic brewing ingredients! 2009 National Organic Brewing Challenge! A National Competition... Entry Deadline Saturday October 10th We are excited to announce we are hosting year three of the National Organic Brewing Challenge. With less than six months before the October 10, 2009 contest deadline, now is a great time to start planning the brews you will enter into the competition. This years contest has the same rules as last year, but there are a few important changes. We have changed a few of the entry catagories- there are still a total of 15 entry categories, each of which will have a first, second, and possible third place prize. Because we received so many hybrid beer style entries last year, we added two new categories- Light hybrid beer and Amber hybrid beer. These categories took the place of the two least popular categories last year: Light lager and English Brown ale. These beer styles, and any other beer style under the sun, can still be entered into the competition under the specialty category. We are also excited to announce that we will be sponsoring a special Grand prize for entries into the two Belgian style categoriesthis year. The winner of this special prize will have the winning recipe made into an Organic Beer Kit. This kit will bear the winners name for the beer as well as recipe credit on the label. The kit will be developed in the month following the contest, and the very first kit made will be shipped to the contest winner in December 2009, just in time for Christmas. In order to qualify for this special prize the beer must be entered in either category 16: Belgian and French Ale, or category 18: Belgian Strong Ale. The recipe must be brewed only with ingredients available from our store, although it is not necessary to purchase the ingredients directly from us in order to brew a winning entry. Our competition home page is the place to find all the details about the NOBC and is where new information will always be posted first: http://www.breworganic.com/Competition/index.html The spirit of this contest is to celebrate the diversity of organic ingredients that are available. Creative and inspired interpretation of recipes is strongly encouraged because not all brewing ingredients are available organic. The range of organic ingredients may be limited, but with today's choices of fresh, clean, organic ingredients, virtually any style is possible to homebrewers with open minds and creative skills! Brewing great organic beer at home is a true challenge, and now those who take the challenge can realize the rewards of prizes and recognition that participation in this contest can bring. These challenges are similar to those of commercial organic breweries- how to brew popular, tasty beer styles without resorting to conventionally grown malt and hops or chemical additives. Brewers who make the choice to brew organic are helping fund a global endeavor to support the huge effort of organic hop and malt growers to cultivate crops commercially and profitably without using a toxic soup of chemicals. Dates: Entries begin September 1st, 2009. Entry deadline is Saturday October 10th at 6 pm Entry Requirements: Entry fee of $7 for first entry and $5 for each additional entry from the same brewer. All malt, hops, and fermentable adjuncts must be verified organically grown. Prizes: Prizes for the 2009 contest will be announced in the summer of 2009. Please let us know if you would like to sponsor the 2009 event! Prizes will be awarded for top placement in every category and will include organic ingredients, T-shirts, brewery merchandise, and pint glasses. Several grand prizes will be offered including a hands-on brewing experience at an organic brewery. Winners and the winning recipes may be published on the Seven Bridges Cooperative recipe page: http://www.breworganic.com/recipes/recipes_menu.htm New Products We often have new items, and we always post them on our new products page: http://www.breworganic.com/Catalog/new_products.htm Monthly Specials Each month we offer a kit of the month and a green coffee of the month for 15% off, plus other great specials: http://www.breworganic.com/Catalog/specials.htm True Organic Brew Whether you brew it yourself or buy it in stores, we encourage all organic consumers to uphold the "Organic Beer Purity Law". Demand that both key ingredients which are cultivated in Earth's soil are certified organic: barley and hops. It's great to get such support from a local brewer. I hope lots of people buy a ton of Scotch Ale, and the Food Bank gets a nice bonus to support their work. See you all at the Brew Fest.
