Message-ID: Time goes so quickly, and we are due again for a beer meeting. I call it a meeting, not a party. That way I don't get in trouble with the soon to be spouse. Anyway, June 20th is the next club meeting, just a week from this Saturday. Sadly our house just won't be up for the get together, and neither will Mikes. Hopefully some lucky club member can offer up a space. The best reason to do this is you don't have to go anywhere at the end of the meeting. So, let us know if you want to be the one to volunteer. We also will brew a beer for the August summer party. We as a club have some grain, and if someone wants to do an all-grain that would be great. If that is just too much, we'll do a tasty extract brew. Let us know if anyone has a place to hold a get together, and brew some beer. Be sure to bring your beer, wine, meads, and anything else you have fermented for sharing. Have a great beer, and see you soon. I usually take a sanitized, wide mouth mason jar to get it. You need to go Monday - Thursday and I would be there before 3. I usually like to et there at 11 am when the tasting room opens. If you brew it, we'll drink it. I've never actually done it myself, but other club members have gotten yeast from Big Sky Brewing in the way you describe. they just open up the tap at the bottom of a fermenter and fill you up. Judy made a slow elk stout clone over the winter using Big Sky yeast. Not sure about kettlehouse, but I bet if you sweet-talked them, and went in when they're not too busy they'd help you out. Same deal with Bayern as KH, I would say. Bill actually harvested Bayern yeast from a case of beer he bought there once - just poured out the sediment from the bottles and raised up the little yeasties until they were strong and ready to go. CLUB - Rats, i can't make the meeting this weekend. I'll be out of town. But hopefully I can enjoy the beer you brew at the summer party in August! One club business item we do need to take care of is the Fair - last year, we were scrambling to put together a demo, which would be a situation to avoid this year if possible. I don't mind doing the demo again, but let's make sure we have sufficient contact with the fair crew so they know our plan and we can get appropriate publicity out beforehand. Have fun. No sure how the meetings go but I have a suggestion as to a meeting spot: What about gathering in one of our great Missoula parks? I have attended/hosted several events and found Missoula Parks and Rec to be pretty flexible. Depending on the park, event permits are liked $20 and alcohol is completely kosher if you register put down a $50 (I think) deposit which you will get back as long as you don't burn anything down. Just give MP&R a call at (406) 541-7200. Hope that helps. I'll stay tuned to hear the final plans.... I'm considering a secondary fermentation where I add some DME (usually I do this when I bottle in place of priming sugar, but have never done it in a bucket as a secondary fermentation). Anyone tried this? Any suggestions on how much DME to use? Do I need another round of yeast as well? I'm not necessarily "aiming" for any particular outcome, but would be curious if anyone knows what the outcome might be. Extra alcohol content? Ruined beer? Exploding bucket? I appreciate your thoughts. Ryan S. A few people at the last meeting expressed interest in getting together to brew the batch, so I thought I'd throw a note out inviting whoever is interested in hanging out and brewing to feel free and come on over. I'm looking at brewing a mini-mash next weekend, probably Sunday since it's 4th of July weekend. So if you want to come by and brew/drink, give some input to the details of the recipe, or just find out what you'll be drinking at the summer party ahead of time, let me know... Normally our get togethers are the third Saturday of the month however in August the 1st is also the first Saturday which would make our party day the 15th of August. There was talk that since there are five Saturdays in August we might consider bumping the party back one week to the 22nd ( which we did last year due to time conflicts for several people.) If there is something that seems to work for the largest number of members lets do it. However lets try and work it out sooner than later. First, Tim Akimoff is giving away a 'collectible growler of craft beer', he says: http://grizzlygrowler.com/?p=739 -- deadline, midnight on Thursday, July 2. So get cracking. I have 5 gallons of Bad Beer. In May, I brewed up 10G of a big blonde beer (with spruce tips) and split the 10G between ale and lager yeasts. The ale was... *milky* in secondary, I kegged it just before heading to Europe (http://www.flickr.com/photos/magnafix/sets/72157620554183539/) and now it tastes bad. Almost drinkable, but acrid, vaguely rotten, cardboardy. Something Went Wrong. If anyone with a morbid curiosity or "flexible" standards wants a taste or a gallon or more, let me know before I dump it Saturday morning. I have read that nothing that screws up beer fermentation can kill you. (The lager seems fine.) Also in May, I brewed 10G of a big complicated European Brown Ale (yea, an "EBA"), and dumped 4oz of French Oak Chips into one of the 5G carboys so we can see how much effect it has.. I will have this on tap in....Sept/Oct. Those of you who had a chance to try my 'Chocoberry Stout' -- I have recently served it to two young women (on separate occasions) who did not disagree with the statement 'this is the best beer I have ever tasted'. Thanks to Mark @ Lolo Peak for the 5 lb of tayberries. The beer is all gone now, but the recipe is scribbled in my beer logbook if you want it. Finally, the aforementioned Europe trip afforded me several opportunities to sample some European beers that would be difficult to find in the US. My tasting report is forthcoming. Short version: Mostly unimaginative (or too subtle for my brutish palate) golden beers, aside from a chestnut-enhanced Corsican beer, a Spanish beer with a blob of hops in every bottle, and of course the Belgians. * This weekend: brewing 10G Centennial/Cascade IPA * On tap: Irish Red, Pale Ale (only 2!) * Secondary: Belgian Golden w/ Coriander, EBA, Chocolate Mead, Blonde Spruce Lager -JM
